Voter registration - there's a new system. Have you registered?

Last week, I was out in Headingley with Chi Onwurah – Shadow Minister in the Cabinet Office.

We were making people aware of the need to register to vote.

Did you know, for example, that the electoral registration system is changing?

The new system is being introduced to replace the one where the “head of household” registered everyone living in a property. Now, each individual will be responsible for registering themselves. It’s also now possible to do it online

Many Leeds residents who haven’t yet registered will soon receive a reminder letter through the post reminding them about this biggest change to the electoral registration system in nearly 100 years. But be careful – the letter suggests there’s a deadline coming up for registration. You’ll actually be able to register until well on into 2015.

But there’s no point in delaying

Most people will automatically move onto the new electoral register.

But only people who were on the old register will be transferred automatically. So if you weren’t registered before, or if you’ve recently moved, you won’t be automatically transferred.

And remember - students may register to vote at both their term-time snd non-term-time address – though they can only vote at one of these in a General Election.

You can register online now.

Voting matters – and you can’t vote if you’re not registered. That’s why Chi and I – with other members of the Labour Party – were out reminding people.

We’ll go on doing that in the coming months.
