CAMPAIGN
FOR ALEX

Registration is for everyday – until 20 April. Alex Sobel out again today, with Dan Jarvis, encouraging people in Leeds NW to register.

Thursday 5 February was National Voter Registration Day. It was the day the millions missing from the electoral register were highlighted – and when efforts were made to register them

Alex Sobel was out encouraging young people to vote last Thursday – at Leeds Beckett SU, for the Bite the Ballot event, and in Headingley and Weetwood

But for Alex, registration is for every day – not just for NRVD.

He’s been out with the team every Thursday for months, encouraging voter registration.

He was out again today – with Dan Jarvis, Shadow Minister for Youth Justice and Victims, getting the message across.

The situation is especially bad among the young – who stand to be a disenfranchised generation.

Only 56% of young people 18-24 are registered to vote – compared with 96% of over 65s.

All this has been made worse by the new registration system.

As a result of that, from March to May 2015, the number of 16 to 18 year-olds being added to the electoral register will be down by over 100,000 compared to 2014. These are young people who will become eligible to vote during the lifetime of this register

It is likely to mean that less than half of those young people eligible to vote for the first time will be registered

That's why Alex is out there working - every week - to alert people to the need to register.

As Alex says

‘We live in a democracy – but not everyone takes part in it – and not everyone is registered to vote and so to have even a chance to take part in it.

Whatever else I believe in, I believe strongly in democracy.

The current situation – with millions disenfranchised - is just intolerable.

For our young people, it’s desperate. Unless they register – and vote – they will continue to bear the brunt of austerity politics.

That’s why I’m out – week after week – encouraging people to register.

And why I’ll go on doing that as long as possible.

NRVD day was tremendous – and it was a great occasion to meet students at Leeds Beckett and throughout Headingley and Weetwood.

But Registration is for every day – at least until the registers close on 20 April.’
