Alex welcomes Leeds Labour Council’s success in securing apprenticeships for young people in Leeds North West

Alex has welcomed the recent figures, which show the success of Leeds Labour Council’s work on apprenticeships in Leeds.

In 2012-13, 490 apprenticeships were started by young people from Leeds North West alone. IMG_0142.JPG

160 of those were in Business, Administration or Law; 130 in the retail and commercial sector, 100 in Health, Public Services and Care, 60 in Engineering and manufacturing technologies, 30 in construction. The others ranged from agriculture, through leisure, travel and tourism.

Leeds Labour Council has been working hard to help young people into apprenticeships, and to encourage employers – including in small and medium enterprises – to take on apprentices.

It’s used its contracting powers to ensure that anyone taking on a Council contract worth over £100,000 must create apprenticeships – the Leeds Arena alone produced 82 apprenticeships as a result.

In any one week, there are around 100 apprenticeship vacancies and it’s vital that we make sure local young people are aware of them and are suitably equipped to apply for them.

This is why, for example, the Council has set up an Apprenticeship Hub which delivers training sessions and engages with local businesses.

Alex has welcomed the statistics

‘I’m proud of Leeds Labour Council’s work on apprenticeships. It’s been in the forefront of efforts by Labour Councils across the country to tackle the problems of youth unemployment in this way – with long-term answers which deliver real skills and an employment future.

Labour local government is making a real difference here.

It’s great news for the 490 young people here in Leeds North West who have gained apprenticeships.

But we’re not resting on our laurels. We won’t be happy until the opportunities are there for all our young people.’
