CAMPAIGN
FOR ALEX

Alex Sobel has signed up to support a Public Service Users Bill.

I have signed up to the ‘We Own It’ campaign to support a Public Service Users Bill – to put people first and make outsourcing and privatization more transparent and accountable.

Cropped_Alex.jpgOver 70 Labour MPs have already signed an Early Day Motion on this. I am among those candidates who have joined them to pledge my support for such a Bill. I’m now calling on Labour to include this Bill in its manifesto.

My own view is that public services should not be delivered by for profit bodies. They should be delivered by organisations whose mission is for public benefit and which are not driven by shareholder value and the profit motive.

I am also a supporter of transparency and open government so taxpayers and staff can see how public money is spent.

So both aspects of the Public Service Users Bill chime strongly with my own beliefs.

The essence of the proposed Bill is expressed in the Early Day Motion

–     public services have been privatised and outsourced without giving a voice to the public service users affected by those decisions;

–     the public needs real powers to object to sell-offs, access information and hold private providers to account for their performance

–     a Public Service Users Bill would address this - by

-      making the in-house option the default,

-      requiring public consultation before privatisation or outsourcing

-      and promoting transparency, accountability and social value in public service contracts

 I am glad so many Labour MPs have signed the Early Day Motion – I would urge our LibDem MP here in Leeds NW to do the same.

If I was an MP now I would have happily signed. So I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to lend my weight to the ‘We Own It’ campaign.
