Alex backs Ed Miliband's ban on second jobs for Labour MPs

I am strongly backing Ed Miliband’s announcement that Labour MPs elected in 2015 will be banned from taking a second job while they are an MP.

When the average annual wage in our constituency is estimated at £20,517, most people in North West Leeds will find it astonishing that Tory MP Malcolm Rifkind felt he couldn’t earn enough on an MP’s salary.

On Wednesday, Tory and Lib Dem MPs voted against Labour’s proposal to ban MPs from taking second jobs while serving their constituents at Westminster. If I had been Leeds NW’s MP, I would have been voting with Labour on that day.

So I really welcome the news that the Labour party will go ahead with its own ban on second jobs for Labour MPs elected in 2015.

As well as a salary of £66,000, MPs can legitimately claim generous allowances to support them in their role - up to a maximum of  £180,000 last year for office costs,  staff, and accommodation, and travel expenses on top of that. With this level of taxpayer support for the work they do, there’s absolutely no justification for MPs taking second jobs.
